Maintenance
Maintaining your
HYDRO-KINETIC
septic system
Did you know that maintaining your Hydro-Kinetic system is important to ensure it works properly and complies with environmental standards?
In fact, according to the Regulation respecting wastewater disposal systems for isolated dwellings (Q-2, r. 22), these inspections help extend the life of your system and ensure that the quality of the discharged water complies with current standards.
*The activities carried out by Enviro-STEP Technologies precisely meet these requirements.
Important article to read:
3.2: Maintenance of the treatment system
87.7: Advanced secondary treatment system
87.13: Tertiary treatment system:
87.18: Discharge standard for a tertiary treatment system
Why maintaining your
system is essential
Maintaining your HYDRO-KINETIC system, combined with compliance with design criteria
and operating guidelines, contributes in particular to:
- Comply with environmental standards
- Maintain compliant effluent quality
- Extend the life of the system
- Avoid breakages, alarms, and emergency interventions
*No maintenance is required on the part of the owner. All checks must be carried out by a qualified person.

Legislative framework
The Ministry of the Environment, Climate Change, Wildlife, and Parks (MELCCFP) requires that all owners of wastewater treatment systems have their facilities inspected and maintained by a qualified person.
Maintenance of the HYDRO-KINETIC system is separate from environmental monitoring. Environmental monitoring may include additional inspections, sampling, and performance analyses at frequencies defined by the MELCCFP.
As such, the owner must ensure that their system is:
Maintained at the prescribed frequency
Operated with the manufacturer's instructions
Compliant with applicable discharge standards
Frequency and maintenance activities
According to the Regulation respecting wastewater disposal systems for isolated dwellings (Q-2, r. 22), the minimum maintenance frequency is as follows:
Advanced secondary treatment system
Annual maintenance
Tertiary
treatment system
Annual maintenance
2 samples
Maintenance activities performed during inspection
Inspection of mechanical and electrical equipment
- Inspection of the pre-treatment chamber
- Checking the operation of the air pump
- Checking the power consumption of the air pump
- Inspection of the air pump diaphragms
- Checking and cleaning the air pump inlet filter
- Inspection of the air diffuser
- Cleaning the air vent on the ventilation cover
- Checking the recirculation pump operation
- Checking the recirculation pump power consumption
- Checking the mixing bar or anoxic zone
- Complete check of the control center or panel
Room maintenance and treatment
- Scrubbing the clarification chamber (as needed)
- Cleaning the flow control device
- Visually inspecting the effluent quality
- Inspecting the overflow openings
- Inspecting the outlet pipes
- Inspecting the HYDRO-KINETIC biofilm reactor
Additional systems (where applicable)
- Verification of the UV disinfection system
- Verification of the PHOS-4-FADE dephosphatation system
- Inspection of the outfall (depending on the type of discharge)
- Inspection of the effluent discharge system
Owner responsibilities and maintenance exclusions
Certain responsibilities related to the operation of the HYDRO-KINETIC system remain the responsibility of the owner
and are not part of the maintenance activities performed by Enviro-STEP Technologies.
Equipment not supplied by Enviro-STEP Technologies
If your treatment system includes equipment not supplied by Enviro-STEP Technologies
(e.g., tertiary pumping system, septic tank, ancillary equipment, or related installations),
these must be maintained by a separate qualified person.
The maintenance, repair, and replacement of this equipment remain the responsibility of the owner.
Items excluded from maintenance activities
The following items are not included in the maintenance of the HYDRO-KINETIC system and remain the responsibility of the owner:
- Environmental monitoring *
- Sludge removal, when required following the measurements taken
- Replacement of defective components (parts and labor)
- Any work on equipment supplied by a third party
- Consumable products (chemicals, UV lamps, carbon filters, etc.)
- Related costs such as electricity, snow removal, building maintenance, and access maintenance
- Work requiring a license from the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (electricity, plumbing, excavation, etc.)
- Any other item not explicitly mentioned in the maintenance mandate description
* The scope of environmental monitoring may involve additional tasks to be performed by the operator at frequencies defined by the MELCCFP, as well as the collection of samples for performance analysis. Check with your consulting engineer to determine the scope of environmental monitoring for your project. Please note that the maintenance provided for in this service offer is separate from environmental monitoring.
